Kunjapuri Temple: serenity and thrill at it’s best

If I have to name that one place in the Himalayas that effortlessly combines serenity and thrill, my first pick always would be ‘Kunjapuri Temple’. Nestled atop a mountain 26km from Rishikesh, it is a sacred spot, loved and most visited by spiritual seekers and adventure lovers alike. Here’s a walkthrough of my unforgettable journey to India’s hidden gem. To me, it is a place where the sunrise felt magical, peace overshadowed restlessness, and the trekker in me was rewarded at heart!

The beginning of the dawn-chasing journey

We started our day early in Dehradun, with a hot cuppa, as the cool mountain air hinted at a beautiful adventure ahead. Kunjapuri Temple was 55 km from Dehradun and 25 km from Rishikesh, which made it perfect for our dawn-chasing mission. As we drove up winding roads, the Himalayas slowly appeared from behind a curtain of mist. Each bend offered a new view – lush forests, sleepy villages, and mountain silhouettes in soft gold. Honestly, there was no better way to reset our city-weary souls.

By the time we approached Hindolakhal, we spotted cheerful trekkers and a few locals making their way up. Though very early, we had had a hearty breakfast! We knew we would need it.

The Final Climb

After a tiring trek, came the real test! We now had to climb 312 steps that led to Kunjapuri Temple. It wasn’t just a workout for the legs; it felt somewhat like a spiritual warm-up, too. There was something about the rhythm of breath, the humming of bell chimes in the distance, and the anticipation of a panoramic vista that made the climb worth every drop of sweat.

Children and elderly devotees ascended these same steps each day, proof that belief gives wings. We felt an occasional burn, but as we approached the top, the energy around us got lighter. Suddenly, we were a part of a centuries-old pilgrimage.

The Legends of Kunjapuri Temple

Kunjapuri Temple is one of the 52 shaktipeeths. It marks the spot where the chest of Goddess Sati fell as Lord Shiva wandered with her body in deep grief. This mystical past added a unique energy. We met devotees who strongly believed that the wishes made here, especially at sunrise, always came true. We made our wish too!

The temple is perched on a 1,676 m high mountain. This temple forms a holy triangle with Surkanda Devi & Chandrabadni temples. All three of them echo with legends, healing, and local lore. As we entered, the sweet scent of marigolds, the sight of priests in prayer, and the simple beauty of the shrine invoked a strong spiritual feeling that’s hard to describe in words.

This was more than a visit. It was a heart-to-heart with divinity!

The magical Sunrise at Kunjapuri Temple

We were here early for nature’s finest spectacle. The eastern horizon glowed orange, slowly bathing the peaks in a warm light. The snow-capped Swargarohini, Gangotri, Chaukhamba, and Banderpunch ranges stood tall, as if guarding the temple in a silent pact.

It was just us, the Himalayas, and a sky playing paintball. Locals say people come from all over the world for this sunrise. And the sight in front of us was life-changing. Photographers couldn’t help but scramble for the perfect shot. But we just sat in silence, feeling the sun on our faces. That was the real win.

The mile markers in the Kunjapuri Temple premises

While exploring the temple premises, a unique structure caught our attention. There was a pole with mile markers mounted on it. They showed directions to Amsterdam, Rome, Tel Aviv, Macau, and many other prominent locations, along with their distance from the Kunjapuri temple. We were pretty surprised to see something like this and kept wondering why it was installed here.

Another Nature’s surprise during the return

Descending was as exciting as climbing up! On our way down, the clouds rolled in, turning the trail mystical with fog. We stopped by a tiny cliffside eatery called ‘View Point Fast Food’ for some snacks. With a hot coffee in hand, cool breeze around us, and a complete whiteout because of the fog – it was a moment to remember. It was a setting straight out of a Himalayan fairy tale!

Food and Festivities

The prasad at the temple was simple, delicious, and felt like a blessing. It wasn’t something to be missed. But beware of the monkeys. As we kept the prasad on the bench to enjoy the views, a monkey came from nowhere and grabbed it. We could only enjoy the first bite we had had.

During Navratri or other festivals, the place transforms with bright decorations and lively rituals. It’s beautiful to witness faith celebrated with color and music. We wanted to avoid the crowd and went just before the festive season.

Planning Tips

  • By car: We drove from Dehradun to Kunjapuri, and it was a hill driving experience beyond compare. I personally recommend a drive up from Rishikesh or Dehradun.
  • Trekking: A beautiful 8-km trail from Hindolakhal takes you up to the temple, recommended for adventurous souls.
  • Best time: We went in September, and the weather and the views were awesome. You can choose to go between March and May for clearer views & between September and November to witness the magic of sunrise and the thrill of trekking.
  • What to carry: Comfortable shoes for trekking, water, a camera, a light jacket, and a sense of adventure.
  • Stay: Rishikesh and nearby towns have budget hotels, riverside resorts, and homestays. You can also choose to be put up in homestays at Narendranagar.
