Downhill to Periche: A day full of reflections and new adventures

Day 13: Thursday, April 28, 2011 (Gorak Shep – Periche | 7-hour trek)

On Day 13 of our unforgettable Everest Base Camp trek, we began our trek downhill to Periche. While some of our group sought further adventure by ascending Kala Patthar for stunning views of Mount Everest, others enjoyed a well-deserved rest. As we retraced our steps, newfound confidence turned our once-daunting journey into a breeze. Despite changing weather conditions, we pressed on, arriving at the charming settlement of Periche, where we bonded with fellow trekkers over shared experiences.

Having reached Everest Base Camp, most of us felt content and satisfied with our accomplishments. However, some of our group sought more adventure, waking up early to hike up to Kala Patthar at 5,550 meters for an even better view of Mount Everest and, naturally, to capture stunning photographs. The rest of us opted for a well-deserved sleep-in, enjoying a break from our usual routine.

By 10 am, following breakfast, we were ready to depart. We caught a final glimpse of Everest and bid it farewell before retracing our steps. With a newfound confidence, the once-daunting journey now seemed like a breeze. We quickly reached Lobuche and soon after descended the steep rock face at Thukla, where we paused for lunch.

As we continued our journey, the weather suddenly shifted, with clouds accumulating and blocking the previously warm sunlight. Gentle drizzles turned into cold winds, prompting us to wear our ponchos for protection. Undeterred, we persevered in our descent, eventually reaching downhill to Periche. The inviting, clean, and cozy accommodations provided a much-needed haven after our long trek.

While there, we encountered an inspiring woman from Delhi who had successfully reached the base camp all by herself. We eagerly engaged in captivating conversations with her, exchanging stories and experiences that enriched our dinner time and extended late into the evening.
